"It has been said that a rolling stone gathers no moss..."
Ed Helms, comedian of "The Office" fame, delivered the commencement speech at the University of Virginia Friday, and some of the biggest applause came when he took a shot at Rolling Stone.
"It has been said that a rolling stone gathers no moss," Helms said. "I would add that sometimes a rolling stone also gathers no verifiable facts or even the tiniest morsels of journalistic integrity.”
Referencing the high-profile, debunked story of a brutal rape in a UVA frat that Rolling Stone published (and then retracted), Helms said he felt for the UVA community as it was “thrown deep into turmoil,” and he said the cause of fighting sexual assault was “needlessly set back” by the whole affair.
Watch the whole speech below — the Rolling Stone remarks come around the 9:40 mark (content warning: mild language):
UVA's dean is seeking $7.5 million from Rolling Stone in a defamation lawsuit filed over the story.
