Caught on Video: Suspect Tasered Multiple Times by Deputy as It Takes ‘Three Guys to Control Him and Bring Him Under Arrest’

"Race was not involved at all...I think he may have used too much restraint."

Things escalated quickly as security guards and local police attempted to detain a suspicious man who appeared to be casing cars in a mall's parking lot.

Cheryl Curtis saw a 30-year-old man peering into windows of cars in the Willowbrook Mall in Houston, Texas, and thought his actions were suspicious. Mall security had the same thought and called for backup from Precinct 4. Collier watched the suspect interact with the officers and whipped out her cell phone to record.

Curtis' video captured Renard Collier refusing to comply with officers' demands as he continued to throw punches and resist arrest, despite being tased by an officer several times.

"Come on, you're making this worse than it has to be. Get on the ground" the officer is heard shouting at Collier as he pointed his taser at him. Collier continued to advance toward the officer.

"Please, dude, come on, don't do this," the officer shouted at Collier after tasing him.

After the officer pocketed his taser, Collier took off. As the officer chased him through the parking lot, it was Collier who turned and tackled the deputy to the ground. A struggle then ensued between Collier and three officers.

Even while Collier was being held on the ground by four officers, he still struggled and attempted to take the taser from the police officer. Eventually he was subdued and arrested as more officers arrived on the scene.

"The folks at the mall felt unsafe," Constable Mark Herman told KHOU-TV of why Collier was approached in the first place. "They felt like he was up to something."

Police suspect that Collier was under the influence of drugs and is being held without bond as he is charged with aggravated assault of a police officer, according to KTRK-TV.

Curtis told KHOU that she doesn't believe the officers were at fault at all during the altercation and was glad her phone had enough battery left to film the altercation.

"Race was not involved at all," Curtis said, referring to the fact that Collier is black and the deputy is white. "He did everything in his power to do the right things and save this man's life, and I commend him."

Herman said the incident will be reviewed by the Use of Force Board but believes the deputy is in the clear and even used a great amount of restraint despite being struck multiple times by the suspect.

"I think he may have used too much restraint," Curtis told KTRK. "I might have done something more serious."

"You see all the headlines about police killing people. But this one — he was asking the guy to please stop," Curtis' son, Trayvon Phillips told KTRK. "It's good, everyone lived to see another day."
