Man Who Filmed Eric Garner Video Has Sickening Allegation Against Prison Officers

He "sustained severe personal injuries..."

The man who filmed New York City police officers placing Eric Garner into a chokehold has filed a lawsuit against the city and alleged that prison correctional officers were attempting to infect him with rat poison.

According to a New York Daily News report in March, 19 Riker's Island inmates reported that they had become ill after they ate meatloaf that was laced with rat poison. The inmates also alleged that officers attempted to confiscate the meatloaf in an effort to cover up the incident; the inmates filed a lawsuit in March.

Ramsey Orta, 24, filmed Garner's death in 2014 and filed his own lawsuit against the city on Wednesday, according to the Stanton Island Advance. He alleged that the prison's correction officers worked with the NYPD to retaliate against him for filming the chokehold, and the poisoned meatloaf was really meant for him.

Orta did not consume any of the contaminated meatloaf but suffered "severe personal injuries," the lawsuit states.

"The plaintiff sustained severe personal injuries, was rendered sick, sore, lame and disabled, sustained severe nervous shock and mental anguish, great physical pain and emotional upset, some of which injuries are permanent in nature and duration," the lawsuit alleged.

The lawsuit, filed in the Bronx Supreme Court against the city Department of Correction, also said that Orta will require further medical attention in order to be "cured of said injuries."

The NYPD, which has denied allegations of targeting, has maintained that the 24-year-old was arrested because he committed crimes as he has an arrest record for drugs and guns and has at least eight convictions.

The Daily News reported that no charges have been filed in the case of the rat poisoning.

Garner's family agreed to a $5.9 million settlement with the NYPD in July.
