It was not immediately clear why Gamble and Allen got into the altercation.
Allen has been a law enforcement officer since 1994 and has served as police chief in Marlin since 2009.
The Thrall Police Department, a town located about 70 miles away from Marlin, posted a message to its Facebook page asking others to keep Allen in their prayers.
