His Star Wars T-Shirt Includes a Character Holding a 'Gun.' His Father Is Calling School's Response 'Political Correctness Run Amok.

"There's not a violent bone in his body."

The parent of Texas middle school student is up in arms after his son was forced to cover up a Star Wars-themed T-shirt that his son was wearing, as it was deemed inappropriate by school officials — an incident that the frustrated father called "political correctness run amok."

Colton Southern reportedly showed up to George Junior High School in Rosenberg, Texas, on Thursday, wearing a "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" shirt, which included the image of a Storm Trooper holding a gun-like weapon, KTRK-TV reported.

It apparently wasn't the first time he had donned the shirt, but administrators reportedly told Southern that the image was unacceptable, and forced him to cover it up.

"It's political correctness run amok," his father, Joe, told the outlet. "You're talking about a Star Wars T-shirt, a week before the biggest movie of the year comes out. It has nothing to do with guns or making a stand. It's just a Star Wars shirt."

School leaders said that they asked Southern to zip up his jacket to cover the image, as the district handbook bans "symbols oriented toward violence" — and, though he wasn't reprimanded, punishments can be doled out for such dress code infractions.

"He's a Boy Scout, active in church, volunteers at Brazos Bend State Park," Southern told KTRK-TV of his son. "There's not a violent bone in his body. He's just an excited kid for the movie."
