Father of Mormon Missionary Who Was Injured in Brussels Attack Reveals Shocking Detail

"He’s someone who could handle this better than anybody."

It's been widely reported that 19-year-0ld Mason Wells was among the Americans injured during the Brussels terror attack on Tuesday, but what some might not realize is that this is shockingly the third terror attack that has personally impacted the Mormon missionary.

Wells, of Sandy, Utah, was with three of his fellow missionaries at the Zaventem Airport in Brussels when explosions broke out, leaving the group with severe burns and other related injuries.

What is perhaps most mind-boggling, though, is the apparent fact that this is the third time that Wells has been near or around a terror attack in recent years; the teen was reportedly in France during last year's attacks — and was only one block from the Boston Marathon finish line with his father while waiting for his mother to complete her run when two bombs detonated back in April 2013.

It's a dynamic that Bishop Scott Bond with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Sandy, Utah, called "incredible" in an interview with the New York Daily News.

"It’s incredible he’d be so close to more than one of these," Bond told the outlet, calling Wells a "terrific young man." "I think any of us would be seriously shaken, but I think he’s someone who could handle this better than anybody. He’s the kind of young man to somehow turn this into a positive."

Wells' father, Chad Wells, also detailed for ABC News how this is the third time that his son has been impacted by terror.

"This is his third terrorist attack," Chad Wells said. "This is the third time that sadly in our society that we have a connection to a bomb blast. We live in a dangerous world and not everyone is kind and loving."

Mason Wells, who was injured by shrapnel, sustained second and third-degree burns to his face and hands and a ruptured Achilles tendon in the Brussels attack had surgery and is in recovery, with his father telling the outlet that he was "extremely close to the blast."

"It’s a blessing from God he’s alive," Chad Wells said. "I think the Boston experience helped him to stay calm."

In a statement issued to People Magazine, Chad and his wife, Kymberly, said that they are grateful that their son survived the attack and is being given medical care, while also sharing details from a conversation that they had with their son after the attack.

"We have spoken to him briefly and he feels blessed that he wasn't injured more given his close proximity to the bomb. He has undergone surgery to repair his Achilles heel and he's also been treated for burns and shrapnel injuries," the statement read. "As a family, we feel the power of prayer from those we know and those who only heard Mason's name for the first time today."
