U2 frontman Bono says the Syrian refugee crisis "threatens the very existence of Europe."

The rock star who recently visited the Middle East made the comment Tuesday ahead of his testimony before the Senate Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs in Washington, D.C.

"What I learned from my trip was that a lot of this great work can get undone, and furthermore that it threatens the very existence of Europe," Bono said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

"The refugee crisis places an existential threat on European unity," Bono added.

Further, Bono predicted that "if we don't get on top of" the refugee crisis, the next president could spend his or her first term "not just putting out fires, but forest fires."
