Here are the states with the most searches for ‘write-in’ ahead of the election

The results are surprising.

It's no secret that Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are two of the most unpopular politicians in modern American history — and what a growing number of Americans are now searching on Google demonstrates that point perhaps better than anything else.

According to Google Trends, online searches for "write-in" spiked by more than 2,800 percent in the last week alone.

And while you might expect a majority of those searches came from voters in states like Florida or Ohio, there are in fact a number of states otherwise considered to be solidly red or solidly blue that top many of the traditional "battleground" states.

While the battleground state of New Hampshire does top the list, the traditionally red states of Alaska and Utah come in at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Meanwhile, the traditionally blue state of Maryland comes in at No. 4. with deep blue Washington, D.C., at No. 5.

Among other traditionally red states making the top 25 for "write-in" searches are Arizona, Indiana and Kentucky.

Connecticut, Michigan and Washington, all traditionally blue states, are also among the top states searching "write-in."
