Supporters of the president were incensed when a writer for The Daily Beast tweeted an insulting description of new White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders early Monday. But it might have been one tweet from President Donald Trump's new communications director that made the writer apologize.

Ira Madison posted a picture of Huckabee Sanders with the description, "Butch queen first time in drags at the ball."

While he eventually deleted the offensive tweet, screenshots were readily available and it quickly became the cause of outrage among Trump supporters.

That's when Anthony Scaramuci stepped in.

The White House's new communications director posted just one tweet Monday about the matter, but he demanded an apology for the insult to Huckabee Sanders.

"The [Daily Beast] should apologize. The comment is reprehensible," he said.

According to the time stamp on the Twitter missives, Madison took an hour and a half to respond. "Apologies to Sarah H. Sanders for the ill-judged joke tweeted Fri, deleted this AM," he tweeted.  "I didn't mean to offend anyone & I'm sorry that I did!"

While Madison made no reference to the tweet from the White House communications director, it was the most prominent post on Twitter asking for an apology.

Scaramucci might chalk this one battle against the media as a win, but he has a daunting task ahead of him in managing the public relations of a White House mired in accusations, recriminations and scandal. The Wall Street entrepreneur made the full run of Sunday cable news networks after he was hired to defend the president and introduce himself to the American public.

Some pointed out that Scaramucci lambasted Trump as a "hack politician" during the 2016 primaries, but he claimed that he had apologized profusely to the president, and that he had graciously accepted.
