Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Friday warned President Donald Trump that pulling troops out of Afghanistan could mean another September 11th attack on American turf.
Graham believes Trump should provide troops with "the tools and support they need to confront the rising terror threats in Afghanistan."
“If we were to pull all our troops from Afghanistan it would be a disaster for our national security interests and set the stage for another 9/11 on American soil," the senator said in a statement.
Trump and his national security team are currently meeting in Maryland to discuss the possibility of sending thousands of additional U.S. and NATO troops to Afghanistan, the Washington Examiner reported. The president, however, has been on the fence about providing more boots on the ground.
During a July meeting, most of Trump's advisors favored sending an additional 3,000 to 5,000 troops to the Middle East, Reuters reported. As part of this plan, U.S. soldiers would join Afghan forces at the brigade level.
According to numerous U.S. intelligence agencies, even a modest increase in troops from the U.S. and its allies would not keep the conditions in Afghanistan from deteriorating, Reuters reported.
