Chuck Schumer was caught on a hot mic talking about Trump. Here's what he said.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer seems pleased with how his relationship with President Donald Trump has progressed lately, evidenced by comments Schumer made on a hot mic Thursday during a C-SPAN broadcast.

What Schumer said

The quotes:

"He [Trump] likes us. He likes me, anyway."

“Here’s what I told him: I said, ‘Mr. President, you’re much better off if you can sometimes step left and you can sometimes step right. If you have to step in just one direction you’re boxed! He gets that. Oh, it's gonna work out. And it'll make us [Democrats] more productive, too."

Perspective

Trump and Schumer have certainly come a long way since January, when Trump referred to the Democratic leader as "Fake Tears Chuck Schumer" on Twitter after Schumer became emotional while denouncing Trump's immigration ban.

Trump has shown an increased willingness to work with the Democrats recently, striking a deal on the debt ceiling that some Republicans didn't like, and now engaging in apparently productive talks toward a bipartisan solution to the DREAMer immigration issue.

Trump may have to guard against any spin resulting from Schumer's comments that gives the appearance to GOP leaders that he is being played by the Democrats. Immigration is a fragile issue and tax reform will be a battle, so even small amounts of discord could derail negotiations.
