A man plowed a van into a crowd of people in Münster, Germany, killing two people and leaving 20 injured, the Daily Mail reported.
Traveling at high speeds, the driver aimed the minibus at families gathered outside the popular Grosser Kiepenkerl bar in the city, which is located 300 miles west of Berlin. The driver then shot and killed himself as the horrified crowd looked on according to the Daily Mail's report.
Six people were left in critical condition and dozens more were injured by the driver, a 48-year-old German national with a history of psychological problems but no known links to terrorist groups, the report states.
Some media reports linked the man to “far-right groups,” but claimed he was not an “extremist.”
Police on Saturday were searching the driver’s apartment for explosives and investigating reports of two other people seen fleeing from the van following the crash, the Daily Mail reported. German police also searched the vehicle for explosives and a “suspicious object” was reportedly found inside.
Photos of the aftermath of the attack showed broken tables and chairs, along with people “running for their lives,” the report states.
The area was teeming with police, fire rescue teams and SWAT teams as law enforcement prepared to search the area and raid the driver’s home, according to the report.
Is this a possible terrorist attack?
Germany officials initially dismissed questions about whether the attack could be the work of an Islamic terrorist group or a refugee, according to published reports.
"At the moment, nothing speaks for there being any Islamist background," State Interior Minister Herbet Reuel said.
"We have to wait, and we are investigating in all directions," Reul added, noting that the driver "willfully drove into a crowd of people."
Chancellor Angela Merkel told media she was "deeply shaken."
"Everything possible is now being done to clarify the facts and to support the victims and their relatives," Merkel said.
The crash happened on the anniversary of the Stockholm, Sweden attack. That attack killed five people injured 14 injured after a stolen beer truck rammed into a crowd, according to reports.
