Nancy Pelosi wonders why Americans are not 'uprising' against Trump admin. over border conditions

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.)  wondered Thursday what it would take for Americans to start an “uprising” against the Trump administration because of immigration conditions along the U.S.-Mexico border. She added that she did not understand why uprisings had not already begun.

Why does she think this could happen?

Pelosi mused during her weekly press briefing Thursday that uprisings could take place once Americans understood that children are being separated from parents when illegal immigrant families attempt to enter the U.S.

According to a video uploaded to the Republican “War Room” YouTube channel, Pelosi said:

When we had a hearing on a subject related to this asylum seeker[s], refugees, etc., the association of evangelicals, the evangelicals, testified that refugees and asylum, that is the — they called it the crown jewel of America’s humanitarianism, crown jewel of American humanitarianism. And in order to do away with that crown jewel, they’re doing away with children being with their moms. This is, I just don’t even know why there aren’t uprisings all over the country. And maybe there will be, when people realize that this is a policy that they defend. It’s a horrible thing. And I don’t see any prospect for legislation here.

The channel labeled the video, “Pelosi’s Extreme Rhetoric: 'I Just Don’t Even Know Why There Aren’t Uprisings All Over The Country.'”

What is the policy?

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar told lawmakers last week that children are only separated when adults attempt to enter the U.S. without following proper protocols.

Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D-Ore.) asked Azar, "Is the policy of separating children from their parents in the best interest of those children?"

"Individual children are separated from their parents only when those parents cross the border illegally and are arrested. We can't have children with parents who are in incarceration, so they are given to me,” Azar said.

"If one presents at an actual border crossing, and presents a case to come into this country, one is not arrested and one's children are not separated from them," he added. "So the best advice I have is, actually present yourself at a legal border crossing and make your case."

"If you cross illegally and get arrested, your children will be given to us," Azar said. "That's the simple fact, it is not a desire, nobody has the desire to separate children from their parents."

Azar also said the children receive “medical care, full education, dental, vision. They’re provided athletics, meals.”
