9 men nearly freeze to death illegally entering US from Canada, found in frozen bog

Nine men attempted to go undetected on an illegal venture into the United States from Canada but had to be rescued from sub-freezing temperatures in a bog, according to Yahoo News.

Nine men, seven of them Mexican nationals, were treated for exposure to the cold near Warroad, Minnesota, on April 18, 2023. The small community is just 7.5 miles south of the Canadian border, southwest of an official port of entry.

At around 5 a.m., rescuers from United States Customs and Border Protection along with Royal Canadian Mounted Police rescued the men, whose ages ranged from 19 to 46. One of the men was able to make an emergency call, and they were subsequently found in a flooded bog.

“When agents arrived on scene, they determined the temperatures in the bog were below freezing and they would require special equipment to reach the group,” a statement from Border Patrol said.

“The agents were able to rescue the men from the frigid water by wearing protective suits," the statement added.

The men were taken in for medical treatments, and seven were taken into custody by immigration authorities. However, the conditions and custody status of the other two men are unknown.

Human smugglers and illegal aliens have long been an issue on the Canada-United States border, and dangerous conditions have often caused problems on illegal treks.

A human trafficker was arrested in late March 2023 for bringing Indian nationals across the St. Lawrence River into an Indian reservation near Albany.

Six Indian nationals were also allegedly caught alongside a U.S. citizen on a sinking boat during a failed human smuggling attempt approaching New York state in May 2022.

In January 2022, a man was charged with human smuggling for allegedly transporting Indian nationals across the border into Minnesota. This happened just a day after four people and a baby were found to have frozen to death in a remote area near the border. In this case, a group of 11 people attempted to walk to the U.S. from Canada during a blizzard. A Florida man was charged with transporting the illegal aliens, but not for the deaths.
