Dems outraged after Trump pins blame for migrant children deaths on ‘pathetic’ immigration policies

'This feels like a new low'

President Donald Trump left Democrats outraged Saturday after he blamed them for "pathetic" immigration policies, which he said are directly responsible for the deaths of two migrant children this month.

What did Trump say?

"Any deaths of children or others at the Border are strictly the fault of the Democrats and their pathetic immigration policies that allow people to make the long trek thinking they can enter our country illegally. They can't. If we had a Wall, they wouldn't even try!" the president wrote on Twitter.

"The two children in question were very sick before they were given over to Border Patrol. The father of the young girl said it was not their fault, he hadn't given her water in days. Border Patrol needs the Wall and it will all end. They are working so hard & getting so little credit!" he added in a second tweet.

Trump's tweets refer to 8-year-old Felipe Gomez Alonzo, who died on Christmas Eve after being taken into custody by immigration officials last week, and 7-year-old Jakelin Caal Maquin, who suddenly died earlier this month while in U.S. custody. Both children traveled with parents from Guatemala.

In response, U.S. officials ordered investigations into both deaths and mandated that each migrant child in U.S. custody receive a thorough welfare check.

What was the response?

Democrats and those opposed to the president were not happy that Trump laid blame for the deaths at the feet of Democratic policies.

  • "this feels like a new low," one person said.
  • "This tweet is disgusting and disturbing in so many different ways," another person said.
  • "Children die. Place political blame. Truly beyond belief," another critic said.
  • "It's really painful to have a President who truly has no compassion. He is right out of a horror movie. When he is finally gone people will speak much more openly about what a monster he is," another person added.

Currently, the government remains partially shutdown as Trump fights for border wall funding that Democrats refuse to approve.
