NYC mayor used taxpayer money to send migrants to Texas, Florida — and even China — while condemning Republicans

New York City Mayor Eric Adams bashed Republican governors for sending migrants to the Big Apple.

But the Democrat is reportedly guilty of doing exactly what he condemned.

What is the background?

Last September, Adams accused Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis of using migrants as political pawns in a "stunt." At the time, the governors were sending busloads of migrants to New York City, which proudly boasts sanctuary policies.

"I think this is a complete political stunt. And that's what has created what is happening here in New York City and my concern is what is happening here in this city, and I believe they created it," Adams said of Republicans. "This is a humanitarian crisis created by human hands and it was a political stunt."

The mayor claimed Republicans orchestrated the "stunt" to "overshadow" their policies on abortion and because of the "proliferation of guns."

What did Adams do?

Documents obtained by Politico showed that Adams used $50,000 in taxpayer dollars to "resettle" 114 migrant households between April 2022 and April 2023.

Ironically, the most common destinations for the migrants were Texas and Florida. Adams also sent migrants to Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, and Ecuador in South America — and even one household to China.

Adams' office defended the resettlement program, claiming what New York is doing (i.e., transporting migrants from one location to another) is different from what red states are doing (i.e., transporting migrants from one location to another).

Mayoral spokesperson Kate Smart said:

The Texas governor chartered buses to New York City and placed asylum seekers, many of whom did NOT want to come here, on multi-day journeys without food, limited water, few bathroom breaks, and no medical attention.

New York City has, as we have discussed very publicly for months, worked to connect individuals with friends, family, and networks whether in New York City or outside of it. We are not coercing people to leave, we are not suggesting or recommending locations, and we are not presenting any kind of false choice.

There is no evidence, however, to back Smart's claims. New York City officials have repeatedly accused Abbott of mistreating and dehumanizing migrants, but they have not presented concrete evidence to prove their claims while Abbott's office has denied every accusation.

Indeed, Abbott spokesperson Andrew Mahaleris accused Adams of "hypocritical charades."

"Less than three weeks ago, Mayor Adams said busing migrants is ‘morally bankrupt.’ Where is all the outrage and condemnation from the White House and Democrats for one of their own sending migrants out of town, out of state, and even out of the country?" Mahaleris said in a statement. "Instead of these hypocritical charades, Mayor Adams needs to call on President Biden and Congress to step up and do their jobs to secure the southern border."

Nearly 80,000 migrants have arrived to New York City since last spring, overwhelming the city's shelter system. There are nearly 50,000 migrants currently on the city's social-support system, and caring for the migrants will cost billions of dollars, leaders have said.
