Migrants throw babies over river into US, rush border after more online rumors claim they’ll be allowed entry

On Wednesday afternoon, dozens of babies and small children were thrown over a narrow section of the river that separates Mexico from the United States after more online rumors claimed the migrants would be granted entry into the country, the New York Post reported.

The United States Border Patrol confirmed that thousands of migrants, mostly Venezuelans, rushed the southern border near El Paso, Texas, on Wednesday.

Rumors circulated on social media that if the migrants surrendered themselves to Border Patrol agents and requested asylum, they would be allowed to enter the United States. The false information caused migrants to storm the southern border, hoping to make it to “the front of the line.”

Border Patrol confirmed that the agency is still enforcing the Trump-era Title 42 policy, which allows agents to expel certain migrants back to Mexico who enter the U.S. illegally, including those from Cuba, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Venezuela.

U.S. Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz posted on Twitter on Wednesday, “People should not believe smugglers or others claiming the borders are open. The borders are not open, and people should not make the dangerous journey. Migrants making an unlawful entry are subject to expulsion and repatriation.”

In a separate tweet, Ortiz noted that from October 2022 to February 2023, agents had performed nearly 8,000 rescues along the southern border.

Wednesday’s frenzy marks the second time this month that false claims on social media have caused an influx of migrants to overwhelm the El Paso sector.

On March 12, a group of approximately 1,000 migrants swarmed the international bridge that connects Juarez, Mexico, to El Paso. Border Patrol used concrete barriers, barbed wire, and officers in riot gear to hold back the large crowd.

The migrants who stormed the southern border reported seeing a social media post that claimed individuals with extreme circumstances or with children would be granted entry into the United States.

The false post, which officials now suspect was created by the Mexican drug cartels as a diversion, directed migrants to go to the U.S. border.

“Don’t miss this opportunity,” it stated.

According to Customs and Border Protection, migrants “once again” were misled by false rumors circulated on Wednesday on social media.

Many migrants have been in Juarez for months, waiting for an asylum interview with CBP.

Border Patrol officials told KTSM that the department would “continue to process individuals safely, efficiently, and effectively at the border and continues to expel migrants under CDC’s Title 42 authority. Those who cannot be expelled under Title 42 who are processed under Title 8 authority and do not have a legal basis to remain in the United States will be placed in removal proceedings.”
