MSNBC's fully immunized Joy Reid ignores CDC mask guidance, claims she still wears two masks while jogging outdoors. Her doctor guest tells her it's unnecessary.

Americans' intellectual betters in the national media — especially in the cable news arena — have been all about reminding people to "follow the science" and "trust the experts" when it comes to the coronavirus pandemic.

  • Dr. Anthony Fauci says wear a mask? Wear a mask.
  • CDC says socially distance? Socially distance.
  • NIH tells you march down and get vaccinated? March down and get vaccinated.

Those same media scolds and their on-air expert analysts, who lecture Americans about following orders, also wag their fingers and click their tongues at anyone who might offer an opinion that differs from the selected group of science personalities worth listening to (who can often be identified by the lab coats or scrubs they wear on television).

MSNBC's Joy Reid has been one of those talking heads doing her best to keep the citizenry in line — especially when it comes to following the guidance on masks.

But her opinion of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's be-all-end-all-ness apparently changed this week, as she revealed on air that she was not following the agency's latest guidance on face masks.

What did she say?

The CDC issued new face mask guidelines Tuesday saying that fully vaccinated Americans do not need to wear masks outdoors, or even indoors in some cases (though there were some exceptions).

Fully vaccinated people, the CDC said, can gather outdoors without wearing a mask except in certain crowded settings and can also gather indoors without wearing a mask or staying six feet apart.

The CDC also explicitly noted that the vaccinated and the unvaccinated can "walk, run, or bike outdoors with members of your household."

But Reid was having none of it.

Just hours after the trusted experts at the CDC put out the mask update, Reid went on her show to declare that she went jogging, but bragged to her guest, Dr. Vin Gupta, that she still wore two masks.

"I am among the fully vaccinated — joined Team Pfizer — and I did go jogging today in the park and this is the mask that I wore with a doctor's mask under it," she said.

She mentioned out that "95% of the people still had masks on" in the "packed" park, which, she said, has really upset a lot of people.

"Should people be freaking out that some people like myself who are vaccinated are still wearing masks outdoors?" she asked. "Should we do that?"

In the clip of the interview MSNBC posted — which does not include Reid's admission that she double masks while jogging outdoors — Gupta pointed out that mask-wearing is a personal preference while adding that the new CDC guidance is "wise policy."

"There is no data — frankly, there has not been data for many months now — that outdoor transmission is a thing, especially in warm, humid air," Gupta told Reid. "We know respiratory viruses don't like warm, humid air, they like cold, dry air."

Noting the warmer weather and millions of people who have been vaccinated, Gupta said, "There's no way you're going to really get exposed unless maybe you're in a rave or an outdoor concert where you're really close to people who are not masking."

Reid, who is not a scientist, said the reason she still wears a mask is because she's worried about the "backdraft" coming off other joggers who are breathing.

Her rejection of the CDC mask recommendations should come as no surprise. She has been so pro-mask that she even admitted weeks ago to being too scared to go without a mask — even if she were fully vaccinated.
