TheBlaze Radio host Buck Sexton on Friday shared a bit of his personal journey from a career in intelligence and national security to a new career in media. Sexton said that, although there are different ways to get into the media game, there are many ups and downs and a steep learning curve for anyone starting as a ground-level writer seeking to gain a national audience.
“I started out as a writer for TheBlaze.com. I think my first title was assistant editor for ... it might have been intelligence and technology," Sexton recalled. "I changed the title as soon as I could to ... national security editor, and I had to fight a little bit to get them to change it to that. I will say this, I learned a lot about website writing at that point in time — the upsides and the downsides of it."
Sexton explained "it is very very hard" to build a career as a writer for a website. It's certainly possible, but he noted, it's an "exploitative" business that feeds off the work of young people directly out of college.
