Student harassed on Twitter over prom pics explains why she chose to wear a Chinese dress
May 03, 2018
High school student Keziah Daum wanted a unique look for prom, so she selected an elegant red dress in a Chinese style. Like any typical teen, she tweeted some prom photos – and was hit with an onslaught of angry Twitter users crying cultural appropriation.
The story was picked up by Twitter Moments and media outlets and went viral, but Daum chose not to cave to the pressure to apologize, saying, "I’m not deleting my post because I’ve done nothing but show my love for the culture."
Daum shared her story on today’s show and reiterated that she chose the dress because she thought it was beautiful and a way to show love and respect for the Chinese culture.
“There’s always going to be someone who disagrees and that’s OK,” she said.
