Nelson, Georgia — a liberals’ worst nightmare?
While imposing restrictions on guns may be a popular move these days, some small towns in America are instead embracing the idea of more guns.
Nelson, Ga., is a town of about 1,300. It has one police officer on the city payroll. Other than that, however, security is up to the town’s individual citizens. To that end, the town of Nelson is currently considering a law that would require each household to keep a firearm in their home.
WSBTV has the story, via the Washington Examiner:
Leaders told Channel 2′s John Bachman the reason they need the law is because the city straddles Cherokee county to the south and Pickens County to the north.
That, they said, can lead to slower response times.
One police officer patrols Nelson, Georgia for eight hours during the day. That leaves 16 hours overnight when the city is basically unguarded.
“When he’s not here we rely on county sheriffs–however it takes a while for them to get here,” said Nelson City Councilman Duane Cronic.
That’s why Cronic proposed the ordinance.
“Every head of household will own and maintain a firearm,” he said.Bill McNiff lives in Nelson, carries a pistol and supports the law.
“I think every city should do it. I think it should go countywide too,” McNiff said.
The Nelson ordinance is modeled closely after the 1982 law passed in Kennesaw.
It requires gun ownership, but allows several outs, like if you’re not physically or mentally able to handle a gun, or if you’re a felon or have religious objections.
“It’s a deterrent ordinance,” Cronic said. “It tells the potential intruder you better think twice.”
In CONTROL, Glenn Beck presents a passionate, fact-based case for guns that reveals why gun control isn’t really about controlling guns at all; it’s about controlling us. Posted on March 9, 2013 at 11:26pmWhen it is less commonsense that having guns in the hands of law abiding citizens will actually cut down robberies and other crimes, it becomes much clearer our government, courts, media and celebrities, which have their own private security for the most part, will pull double standards to become the thieves stealing our rights.

Posted on March 9, 2013 at 2:44pmI don’t know if it’s still on the books but it used to be law in this country that you had to own a shotgun/rifle on Sundays and carry with you to church!

Posted on March 9, 2013 at 3:20amI am pro-gun, but have a couple problems with this one:
1) The government should not mandate ownership or purchase of anything (like health insurance);
2) If exemptions are provided, will a list be maintained as part of the public records?
3) Most of these residents are familiar with guns, I am sure, but what about the ones that are not? Who will give them basic gun safety training, if new owners request it?
4) If they want a gun but cannot afford it, who will pay for it?
Rather than mandatory ownership, need to focus on supporting residents that use guns in their own defense: ref: Texas’ Castle law, Florida’s Stand Your Ground law, improved concealed and open carry laws, etc.
With all that said, I applaude the community for stepping up, taking local action to adress the issue. We need more small communities to stand up to offset the nutbags in the cities who think everyone is as deviant as they and who, at the moment, are controlling the dialogue.

Posted on March 9, 2013 at 2:41pmRebuttal in numerical order: 1. The Feds can’t force you to buy or own anything not states or local govt. However that was decided with O’care! State n Local govt can go beyond the constitution so long as it doesn’t violate civil liberties; theory being vote with your feet! 2,3,4 could only be decided when the law is debated and passed since this is only a proposal!

Posted on March 10, 2013 at 10:41amIt seems like the government already demands such things as garbage disposals. It seems like it happened more than seventy years ago in a little town in Indiana, close to Bloomington. The court case went pretty high up the food chain. The government can make you buy a garbage disposal. It was for your own good as I remember.
