Trayvon Martin to get posthumous science degree from university ... in aviation
May 05, 2017
Florida Memorial University will award Trayvon Martin a posthumous bachelor of science degree in aviation during the commencement ceremonies on May 13, the school announced on Facebook.
Martin, a black 17-year-old, was fatally shot by neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman in 2012. The incident sparked a national controversy, and Zimmerman, who claimed self-defense, was acquitted of murder a year later.
The college in Miami Gardens announced that Martin's degree is in aeronautical science with a concentration in flight education "in honor of his love for planes and the steps he took during his young life toward becoming a pilot, including his connection to Barrington Irving (a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Florida Memorial University; in 2007 he was the youngest person and only African American ever to fly solo around the world ...)."
FMU noted that the degree "is designated for students studying to become pilots" and that Martin's parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, will accept the degree on behalf of their late son.
