Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro survived an apparent assassination attempt on Saturday after several drones armed with explosives flew near him while he was delivering a speech at a military parade.
Footage of the incident shows Maduro speaking about economic recovery when suddenly an explosion is heard in the background. Maduro looks up and winces as his security detail surrounds him. After a second explosion, his security team ushers him offstage.
The incident happened around 5:30 p.m. during a ceremony celebrating the Venezuelan National Guard's 81st anniversary, according to ABC News.
"This was an attempt to kill me. Today they attempted to assassinate me," Maduro said after the incident.
While Maduro was not injured, seven members of his National Guard sustained injuries in the attack, according to CNN, which Maduro blamed on "far-right" factions in the war-torn country and outgoing Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos. He also placed blame on Venezuelans living in Florida.
A source from Bogota told Reuters that Maduro's claim was "absurd" and explained the Colombian president was celebrating his granddaughter's baptism on Saturday — not working to topple foreign governments.
According to CNN, an investigation is underway. Venezuelan leaders also claim they have already made several arrests. However, the Venezuelan government did not say who was arrested or what charges were brought against them.
Reuters reported that a little-known group called the "National Movement of Soldiers in T-shirts" claimed responsibility for the attack.
