2018: Everything has changed, yet nothing has

Chicks dig the long ball. –Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine

Hey man, I don’t make up the rules. They just are. No matter how many "men" wear dresses and no matter how many "ladies" assault you with charges of pronoun violations.

So Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., can tweet that the future is female and intersectional all she wants, but as 2018 draws to a close, biological destiny has a middle finger salute for your "science."

It’s in the form of a recent study that found the preference for mate characteristics did not lessen in countries with greater gender equality — political correctness be damned. Gender-equalized women continued to be most interested in the earning capacity of their men, while men continued to be focused on the physical attractiveness of their women. In other words, no matter how woke we are, we can't escape the tale as old as time.

How can this be? Don't these non-gender-specified beings realize just how bigoted they are by holding on to such antiquated notions? Haven't they seen a single episode of “The Handmaid’s Tale”? Why would they stick to nature's laws, when the human laws have freed them from the oppression of the hetero-normative patriarchy?

There's a potential answer to this dilemma.

Maybe, just maybe, stay with me now, this is a sign that God made us not only different but complementary to one another for a purpose. In other words, even in a crazy gender-bending age like ours, the past, present, and future, Sen. Gillibrand, really belongs to Him.

No matter how far east of Eden we drift, a road map back home has been gifted to us at the cellular level. We can't escape our destiny, because it's more than fate; it’s providence. It's all part of the plan. This is Romans 1 at work, where the Scriptures lay out our pathetic human tendency to believe stupid, monstrous, and God-replacing lies. But it also makes clear we can’t help but know the truth, if only we pay attention to the good and beautiful things God has made to inform us of His quality and His character.

And among the most beautiful of the things God has made is when "two become one." Men and women, each bearing the image of God, can be pretty amazing on their own. But when you put them together and they love and respect one another as the Creator commands, something downright cosmic happens. We meet each other’s needs in a deeper, more intimate way than at any other time. We literally create and nurture new life together. We become more of what we were always meant to be.

I know much of this seems trite now, but that doesn’t make it any less true. And while much of academia, the media, pop culture, and politicians like Gillibrand claim otherwise, it turns out we really want the same things human beings have always wanted.

As 2018 draws to a close, everything has changed, yet nothing has. All the old standards may be gone, but all the old desires remain. Nature always finds a way. God's Word does not return void.
