Laura Ingalls Wilder’s removal from book award met with ‘standing ovation’
June 25, 2018
The board of the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, decided unanimously on Saturday to remove Laura Ingalls Wilder's name from a major children's book award. The decision was received with "a standing ovation by the audience in attendance," The Hill reported the board said.
The association decided to remove Wilder’s name from the award because her works include "expressions of stereotypical attitudes inconsistent with ALSC's core values."
Wilder was the first author to receive the award, in 1954, for her Little House on the Prairie series, which, in her own words, “represented a whole period of American history.”
Wilder's name was replaced with the nondescript title “Children's Literature Legacy Award.”
