Trump signals support for Swampcare deal

After signing an executive order eliminating the illegal, unconstitutional payments, President Trump has seemingly completely reversed his position on ending Obamacare’s cost-sharing policies.

Speaking to reporters Tuesday, the president said he would support a deal struck between Sens. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., and Patty Murray, D-Wash., to restore the subsidies — essentially amounting to bailouts for insurance companies — through 2019.

Trump called it “a short-term solution so that we don’t have this very dangerous little period.” But agreeing to restore the cost-sharing payments with congressional authorization is a far cry from the position the president had last week.

“Over”? Not so it seems, and that’s catching conservatives by surprise.

It seems that for the president, ending the insurance-company subsidies wasn’t a principled decision. It wasn’t a matter of good policy. It was a bargaining chip Trump used to force the Democrats to come to the table on a new bipartisan bailout for Obamacare.

A deal has been made. But what good are these deals if they betray Republican campaign promises and preserve the national, long-term disaster that is Obamacare?

This is not the deal Trump voters wanted.
