Squires: If Blac Chyna is too far away for God to save, then so are we all

Good Friday is the Christian holiday that commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. It is an important day for every genuine believer because of its spiritual significance, but the redemption plan that began in Genesis doesn’t end on Friday.

Christians will gather in church on Sunday to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection in Easter services across the globe. The death, burial, and resurrection of Christ are essential to Christianity. Without them, no Christian could be “born again.” We would still be in bondage to sin and face the penalty for indulging it – spiritual death and eternal separation from God.

Thankfully, Christians are made spiritually alive through Jesus. As it says in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

One person who seems to have heeded God’s invitation is Blac Chyna, the reality show personality, model, and former girlfriend of Rob Kardashian. Chyna, who goes by her real name, Angela White, says she is a new woman following her baptism last May.

She also appears to be making changes in her life to reflect her new faith. She left OnlyFans, underwent a breast reduction, and removed silicone fillers from her face and bottom. White also shared the removal of a Baphomet tattoo on Instagram with her 16.9 million followers.

She claimed to be connected to a church and has a circle of Christians who pray for her and give her counsel. I have no way of discerning the sincerity of any person’s faith walk, but one of the hallmarks of repentance is turning away from the sins that kept us in bondage in order to pursue God.

Sure to follow Angela White around are the accusations of faking her conversion in order to create a more wholesome image for the sake of making money.

One popular Twitter user went down Blac Chyna’s rap sheet. He brought up her children by multiple men, sex tapes, OnlyFans account, vulgar songs, and Baphomet tattoo. He characterized her new profession of faith as the “rebirth after the burnout.” I challenged that view and pointed out that a person who doubts God’s redemptive power is in a far worse spiritual position than Blac Chyna ever was.

Even White’s own mother, who goes by the name “Tokyo Toni,” is casting doubt on her. Toni seems to lack certain maternal instincts, as evidenced by this vulgar statement about her daughter’s recent profession of faith.

“Chyna is a PR stunt. C’mon bitch, we know better. I don’t give a f*ck if she don’t ever talk to me in life, chile. I raised her, had her, taught her, she know everything! This b*tch is faking.”

There are certain people who claim to believe in God but doubt the power of the cross. They think Christ’s atonement for sin only covers the minor, private sins – a bit too much to drink here, a little toke of reefer there. When it comes to strippers, prostitutes, fornicators, adulterers, or homosexuals, they assume some people are too far gone for God to save.

The Apostle Paul certainly wasn’t one of the people who doubted God’s power to save. After rattling off a list of sins that keep people in bondage, he utters six of the most important words in the Bible: “And such were some of you.”

That is the essence of the Christian faith, but many people do not understand. That is why what Angela White needs now is prayer. Christians should pray she finds a solid local church, specifically one that preaches the Gospel and believes in the inerrancy and sufficiency of the Bible. Celebrity preachers like Joel Osteen and T.D. Jakes are magnets for high-profile athletes and entertainers, but any pastor who refuses to talk about the bad news of sin cannot effectively deliver the good news of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and eternal life.

What Angela White does not need right now is to become the new face of Hollywood Christianity. Sometimes believers get too eager to have a celebrity “on our side,” in part because deep down, many of us are embarrassed by aspects of our faith and crave the approval of the culture. A new convert whose trajectory took her from D.C. to Miami to L.A. is just the type of person some Christians think can add credibility to the church.

The greatest example of this is Kanye West. There are Christians who have been trying to get the enigmatic rapper on “our” team since they heard “Jesus Walks” in the early 2000s. Their hope grew even stronger when he released his album "Jesus Is King." Since then, he has done everything from criticizing the abortion industry to praising Hitler and the Nazis.

This isn’t a criticism of Kanye. Jesus’ parable of the sower gave an illustration of seed falling on different types of ground – the path, rocky ground, among thorns, and in good soil. The story highlights two things: 1) Only God knows the condition of a person’s heart and 2) Only time will reveal that condition to the world. We are never so far away that God can’t save us. That’s what puts the “good” in Good Friday.
