"Plays like advocacy work masking as law enforcement propaganda."
"Border Wars" began its new season recently on National Geographic and already the critics are divided. The reality show has been described as "a somber series about the battle at the Mexican border." The Los Angeles Times review hit pretty hard:
Accidentally or not, "Border Wars" plays like advocacy work masking as law enforcement propaganda. First there is the imbalance in scale between the officers and their targets. The show highlights not only the organization required to track illegal activity, but also the depth and organization of the illegal systems themselves.
The New York Daily News much have been watching a different episode:
The human issue is the focus here, and the producers of "Border Wars" don't try to editorialize on the larger question of who's right and wrong and in what ways. The only certainty is that the game will go on.
