Romney Files for Tax Extension

Mitt Romney filed for an extension for his 2011 tax returns, his campaign announced Friday.

In a statement, the Romney campaign said the extension is "similar to what he has done in prior years."

Romney will file and release his 2011 tax return "sometime in the next six months, and prior to the general election," the campaign said.

The announcement came hours after President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden released their 2011 tax returns.

According to The Hill, the Romney's extension estimated his total tax liability to be $3.2 million and that he paid an estimated tax of $887,000 with the extension.

Romney released his 2010 tax return in January amid mounting pressure on the campaign trail to do so.
