Police Arrest Drunk Driver With a Zebra and Parrot in the Passenger Seat

"This man and his wife apparently see the animals as their children"

KCRG is reporting that a man from Cascade, Iowa was pulled over Sunday night for driving under the influence and, apparently, he also had a zebra and a macaw parrot in the front seat of his car.

The man was not part of a bachelor party or trying to re-enact the Hangover, rather, this man and his wife apparently see the animals as their children, and often take them for drives.

On this particular night, they even tried to bring them into a bar because they thought the establishment allows animals.

Not surprisingly, the manager stopped them at the door.

KCRG has more information:

Officers charged Jerald Reiter, 55, with OWI. Police reports say officers stopped him in the parking lot of the Dog House Lounge as he drove away in his truck.  According to police, field sobriety tests showed Reiter had a blood alcohol level of .14.  The legal limit in Iowa is .08.

[...]

Reiter disputes the charges and says he realized he was too drunk to drive and was about to let a passenger in the truck to take the wheel when he was arrested.

Online records show Mr. Reiter was released from the Dubuque County Jail May 21, 2012.

Reiter has speculated that someone called the police on him when he went to put the animals in the car, after they were turned away from the bar.

He's due to appear on KCRG TV later tonight, to explain more fully.
