Teacher of the year' receives pink slip while non-teacher of the year keeps job

Michelle Apperson is a sixth grade teacher in California who was recently named Teacher of the Year. Then she lost her job because of budget cuts.
Surely Apperson was the last to go because she's so awesome. Wrong!
A district spokesman told KXTV the teacher layoffs were based on seniority, not performance, and mandated by the state.
Sorry, kids. You're now stuck with Ms. Maples, the older, boring teacher who smells like cheese.
