Honesty: Democratic Congressman Leaves Congress Because 'Nothing Is Going to Happen

Democratic Representative Dennis Cardoza of California might not hold your political beliefs, but if you want to talk about a "no BS" attitude, you can't do much better than his most recent announcement.

What announcement? Why, the announcement that Cardoza is leaving Congress effective tonight, of course! You see, Rep. Cardoza was already planning to retire, but thought he might be able to achieve something in his last year in office. With slightly less than half a year to go, he apparently decided that was a fool's hope.

“In light of the fact that nothing is going to happen for the rest of the year, and in light of the fact that (my wife) and I are facing increasing parenting challenges, this seemed the right time to make this move,” Cardoza told the Sacramento Bee in an interview yesterday.

So abrupt is Cardoza's election that no special election will be held to fill out his term. Rather, his office will remain in operation, with staff corresponding with constituents and essentially managing any and all duties that the Congressman otherwise would have been required to perform. It will be as though a ghost is representing California's 18th District.

Due to redistricting, Cardoza's seat is not technically up for grabs come November. Rather, whoever the Republican nominee is will likely face current Democratic Congressman Jim Costa, who would have been stuck in a primary against Cardoza if the latter had not retired.
