This weeks 'Real History' documentary explores the vicious 1928 presidential election between Republican Herbert Hoover and Democrat Al Smith. Smith was the first Roman Catholic nominee for President, something that caused him to lose in a landslide. Opponents spread rumors that were Smith to be elected, the Pope would be dictating American policies. Of course, Hoover remained above the fray, but his surrogates were more than happy to savage his opponent. Smith lost to Hoover in a landslide.
