CA Delegate Booted From DNC After Trying to Impersonate a Congressman

"became disruptive with hotel staff and emergency technicians"

A bizarre incident unfolded at a hotel housing delegates for the Democratic National Convention (DNC). The incident, which involved alcohol, led a California delegate to be ejected from the convention. But, it wasn't the substance that directly led the man to be cut from the political party's festivities -- it was, at least in part, his false claim to police that he is a member of Congress.

The odd incident commenced early Sunday morning when two men -- both delegates -- arrived by taxi at The Blake Hotel in Charlotte, North Carolina. One of the men was passed out and presumably drunk, so the other delegate assisted him in entering the hotel around 2 a.m. When hotel staffers saw that the man who was not coherent purportedly fell or was dropped, they called 911 to report the incident.

Now, here's where the situation gets interesting. The sober (or more sober of the two -- we're not sure) delegate battled with staffers and paramedics who were reportedly on the scene to help the unconscious man, telling them that his friend merely needed to be put to bed.

At this point, he allegedly told police that he was a member of Congress, an overtly false claim. Despite telling this monumental lie and despite the disturbance, he was not arrested. Instead, he was kicked out of the hotel and will not be allowed to attend the convention. According to FOX News, he has since apologized for his actions. The Charlotte Observer recaps the events that unfolded:

"One of the delegates appeared to the hotel staff to be unconscious and they called paramedics," delegation spokesman Tenoch Flores said Sunday afternoon. "They transported him to a hospital. He has since recovered and was released."

Flores said the other delegate "became disruptive with hotel staff and emergency technicians" and the hotel staff called Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.

That delegate was not arrested, but the California Democratic Party met Sunday afternoon and asked him to leave the hotel and not take part in the convention, Flores said. The delegate, he said, apologized to the hotel staff and agreed to leave and not be a part of the convention.

The delegate who was sent to the hospital was later released. The men's names have not yet been released.
