There has been much discussion of Grover Norquist and the Americans for Tax Reform "Taxpayer Protection Pledge" over the last week as the Fiscal Cliff talks have heated, and several sitting Republicans have come out to publicly distance themselves from the pledge. Looking beyond how much Norquist's pledge will play into the Fiscal Cliff negotiations, the "Real News" panel Thursday discussed the broader idea of political pledges. Are pledges in general something that stands in the way of principled decision-making by boxing in independent thought? Are they ultimately unsustainable?
