MSNBC's Chuck Todd Relays 'Depressing' Convo: Obama Aide Said 'There'd Still Be Slavery' With Today's Republicans

"An interesting and depressing observation from this very smart White House aide"
MSNBC's Chuck Todd appeared as a panelist on "Morning Joe" Monday, relating a statement from what he described as a "very smart" White House aide.
After a discussion of TIME columnist Joe Klein's recent article-- in which he argued that Abraham Lincoln would "cut" deals for the greater good and Obama must be a similar "master politician"-- Todd weighed in.
"You're going to like this," he began. "So, I threw the Lincoln analogy at a close aide to the president last week, and he said, 'You know, with this Republican-- with the way politics of Washington are today-- there'd still be slavery. Lincoln wouldn't have been able to navigate the polarization between the media, between this...'"
Rather than condemn the comment as inaccurate or incendiary, Chuck contributed: "It was an interesting and depressing observation from this very smart White House aide."
