TX Utility Company Sparks Furor After Removing Group's 'Keep Christ in Christmas' Sign

"I think it’s a war on Christ – period."

New Braunfels Utilities (NBU), an energy company in New Braunfels, Texas, is at the center of a debate surrounding "Keep Christ in Christmas" banners that were, for a time, displayed in front of the establishment. However, after receiving complaints due to the religious nature of the message, NBU decided to take down the banners, which were sponsored by the Knights of Columbus.

"Regardless of whether one agrees or disagrees with the message, NBU is a municipal utility and cannot lawfully display a religious message," explained NBU communications manager Gretchen Reuwer.

The policy that stands, the spokeswoman noted, is that no signs or banners promoting specific religious messages are permitted, as they may offend portions of the population. NBU does allow non-profit organizations to hang banners, however they are not permitted to have religious messages and can only be posted for the purpose of fundraising.

WOAI-TV has more about the controversy:

"We made an error in accepting the banner," Reuwer added. "It was a simple human error – and to compound it – it was also a banner with a message that was specifically religious."

Some in the community -- especially Knights of Columbus members -- are outraged by the utility company's decision to remove the banners. One resident, Joe Hernandez, told Fox News' Todd Starnes that "Christ is the reason for the Christmas season" and that it is "his birthday."

"All we were doing was voicing our opinion – that Christ should be kept in Christmas," Hernandez added. "It’s not a war on Christmas. I think it’s a war on Christ – period."

The banners have been relocated to public property. What do you think about the decision to remove them -- was it right or wrong?
