A South African man took the law into his own hands after he confronted a visibly intoxicated cop and locked him up in the back of his own police vehicle. The incident reportedly occurred in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday and now Russell George is being praised as a hero.

“The van turned into Victoria Road, and drove into oncoming traffic. At one stage, he stopped. I got out of my car and asked him what he was doing," George said.

The unidentified police officer sped off in his van, but George stayed on his tail and called the police to report the policeman. George said the van stopped for a second time and this time he decided to confront the drunk cop.

“I could smell the booze on him. He refused to get out of the car, so I took his keys," he added.

After confiscating his keys, George then pulled the man from the driver's seat and placed him the back and locked the door.

One witness said the police officer argued it was his birthday and his friends had each given him a bottle of alcohol.

"He then started to cry," the witness said.

To make matters even worse, police spokesman Joey Jeevan confirmed that the officer had been arrested, and said he had gotten into a collision earlier in the night with his well. Jeevan also said the cop had an argument with his girlfriend, during which he reportedly pointed a gun at her.
