Notable & quotable: Hagel stinks on ice
WASHINGTON, DC - JANUARY 31: Former U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) testifies before the Senate Armed Services Committee during his confirmation hearing to become the next secretary of defense on Capitol Hill January 31, 2013 in Washington, DC. President Barack Obama nominated Hagel, a controversial choice as Hagel opposed former President George W. Bush and his own party on the Iraq War and upset liberals with his criticism of a gay ambassador, for which he later apologized. Credit: Getty Images

Notable & quotable: Hagel stinks on ice

In case you missed it, President Obama's nominee for Secretary of Defense -- Sen. Chuck Hagel -- gave stunning testimony yesterday during his confirmation hearing. Stunningly awful.

Hagel faced a rough round of tough questions from Republican Senators, including moderate softy Sen. Lindsay Graham who challenged Hagel to name one senator “intimidated” by the “Jewish lobby.” Not surprisingly, Hagel couldn't/wouldn't/didn't.

Hagel's underwhelming performance even left his fellow Democrats in disbelief. “It is very clear from the testimony that Sen. Hagel will not be bringing the potato salad to the next Mensa picnic," one long-time Capitol Hill Democrat told the Washington Post.

WaPo's Jennifer Rubin admits -- Hagel is sinking his own nomination:

Will any Democrats throw up their hands and refuse to pretend he is credible and competent? Maybe. But every single Republican – any fair person not under the thumb of the White House, really – has more than enough reason to oppose and block the nomination. Hagel has proven himself to be a remarkably ill-considered pick. If the Democrats won’t, Republican senators should save the president and the country from an unqualified and unsuited pick. Imagine if this man were sent to Tehran or Jerusalem or Russia on a critical visit? I shudder to think of it.
