President Barack Obama was briefed by FBI Director Robert Mueller and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano following the explosions at the Boston Marathon Monday afternoon, a White House official said.

Obama was briefed on the active investigation and response to the incident, including coordination with state and local officials.

He spoke earlier with Boston Mayor Tom Menino and Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick to express concern for those injured and to say the administration was ready to provide any needed support.
