Wild Supermarket Fight Caught on Camera Leads to Ecuador Ambassador's Recall From Peru
May 07, 2013
"ignorant Peruvians"
Ecuador and Peru have agreed to reassign their ambassadors following a supermarket altercation involving Ecuador's ambassador to Peru. As noted in previous reports, many Peruvians called for the envoy's expulsion over the April 21 skirmish.
Ecuador's foreign ministry announced that Ambassador Rodrigo Riofrio was being removed from his post, adding that the ambassador made the request himself. Riofrio still insists he didn't start the fight.
Riofrio allegedly struck and kicked a Peruvian mother and daughter after accusing the two of cutting in line. The mother says he called them "ignorant Peruvians" and made a disparaging reference to the country's large indigenous population.
She tells a Peruvian TV channel that Riofrio hit and kicked her and her daughter Saturday in front of dozens of witnesses. She did, however, allow that her daughter had struck the first blow, slapping Riofrio's wife in the face after the latter insulted her.
Cellphone video taken immediately afterward showed Riofrio being harangued by witnesses.

Ecuador's embassy issued an apology after the incident but said it does not accept the women's version of events.
