I Have to Go Where the Truth Is Taking Me': Bachmann Explains Her Controversial Defense of NSA Data-Collecting Policies

"This program that I am looking at is not our problem."

Representative Michele Bachmann (R-MN) appeared on Glenn Beck's weekday radio program Monday to explain her controversial defense of the National Security Administration's data-collection policies, after receiving heat on the program last week.

Beck made clear at the beginning of the interview that he still has deep respect for the congresswoman, but felt like he got "hit in the face with a baseball bat" on the NSA issue.

The two repeatedly seemed to come back to Bachmann's assertion that she has found "no evidence" that the NSA is "listening in" on the phone calls of Americans, or "reading and keeping on file the emails between U.S. persons," and Beck saying he doesn't believe the government is actively listening to calls or reading emails, but that they are storing the information for a later point.

Moreover, Beck pointed out that the U.S. government has lied to Americans "over and over," and that he is not willing to sacrifice "personal liberty for the sake of security."

Bachmann asserted: "What I'm trying to say is that I've been trying to use my best efforts ever since the Snowden report came out...I've been trying to discern through my best efforts what's truth... I have to go with where the truth is taking me, just like you do, and based upon everything I've seen so far what I've discovered, I haven't found the problems in that program that have been reported."

Earlier, Bachmann said the "problem has been that this program has been conflated with other scandals that are out there, and based on everything I have seen so far, this program that I am looking at is not our problem."
