President Obama is on a quest to break down supposed gender barriers within the United States Marine Corps, starting with the uniforms.
The New York Post reports:
Thanks to a plan by President Obama to create a “unisex” look for the Corps, officials are on the verge of swapping out the Marines’ iconic caps – known as “covers” — with a new version that some have derided as so “girly” that they would make the French blush.“We don’t even have enough funding to buy bullets, and the DoD is pushing to spend $8 million on covers that look like women’s hats!” one senior Marine source fumed to The Post. “The Marines deserve better. It makes them look ridiculous.”
The thin new covers have a feminine line that some officials think would make them look just as good on female marines as on males — in keeping with the Obama directive.
So... the Obama administration's way of making women feel more comfortable in the Marines is to outfit them with tinier, daintier hats? Nice.
Last I figured, Marines don't sign up for duty because the uniforms look appealing (although they are quite spiffy). But this is a classic example of progressives' idea of what equality for women should look like: less masculine men. If you wanted to send the message that when it comes to serving in the Marines women are no different than the men, it would stand to reason that you'd avoid pointing out how different they are. But that's just my two cents...
If the gender politics aren't enough to draw you into this pseudo-debate, let's talk about the new design. Is it just me or does it seem like we're now recycling designs from Amtrak for the Marines?
