It's Hard to Believe That Pope Francis Used to Do This For a Living

Before Pope Francis became known as the compassionate champion of the poor and the infirm, he used to work as a bouncer in a Buenos Aires nightclub.

Yes, the same Pope Francis who recently told church and world leaders to "respect and promote the poor" used to make his money ejecting rowdy patrons from a nightclub.

Francis made this revelation while speaking to an audience Dec. 1 at the church of San Cirillo Alessandrino near Rome, Catholic News Services reported.

“No longer kicking troublemakers out of clubs, he has discovered the secret to bringing people back, this time, into the church,” the report reads. “He told one group that when he was young, he worked as a bouncer, and that his work later in life, teaching literature and psychology, taught him how to get people back into the church.”

The U.K. Telegraph reported the bouncer factoid earlier this year.

Francis worked his way through college, eventually earning a master's degree in chemistry at the University of Buenos Aires. He later became a Jesuit priest. From there, he earned degrees in philosophy and theology and started the road toward becoming the leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
