Man Gets Jail Time, Fine and Loses Hunting Privileges Until 2020 for Shooting Out-of-Season Turkey

According to the state DNR's most recent weekly report, a Grand Traverse County District Court judge sentenced the unnamed man to 45 days in the county jail, served him $2,000 worth of charges and revoked his hunting privileges until 2020.
The charges are broken down into $1,000 in fines and costs and $1,000 for reimbursement for the turkey.
If this sounds harsh, it is in line with the mandatory penalties posted online for illegally taking a wild turkey, bear or deer.
The penalty includes "$200 to $1,000 fine and 5 to 90 days in jail, restitution of $1,500 for bear, $1,000 for deer/turkey, plus revocation of hunting licenses for remainder of year convicted, plus next three consecutive years."
It is unclear why this man's hunting privileges have been revoked for what seems to be a longer length of time than the posted penalties.
The turkey hunting season in Michigan lasted from Sept. 14 through Nov. 14.
