“Obama decided to try his hand at satire by going on that show, so we decided to play along."
If Dinesh D’Souza ever had the chance to direct an interview with President Barack Obama — the object of the conservative filmmaker's well-documented criticism — it might go something like this:
As you can see, D'Souza doesn't actually meet Obama in the flesh — rather he dropped himself into the viral episode from the Funny or Die series "Between Two Ferns," subbing for host Zach Galifianakis.
In the original, the president was promoting his health care law; D'Souza's spoof — "Between Two Americas" — is a plug for his upcoming film, "America."
D'Souza started off by immediately slamming Obama, saying they "were supposed to have the leader of the free world, Vladimir Putin, but he was busy...so, welcome for the second week in a row, Barack Obama."

Sprinkled into the high-level "chat" is a reference to D'Souza's first documentary, "2016: Obama’s America," specifically an interview with the president’s impoverished half-brother, George Obama. The president "told" D'Souza he hasn't seen the flick.
“OK, maybe you weren’t the target audience,” D’Souza said.
When Obama mentioned the Thanksgiving tradition of pardoning turkeys, D’Souza hinted, “Well, if you’re going to be handing out pardons." D'Souza has been charged with violating campaign finance law and is set to stand trial in May.
All of this led to Obama pressing a big button so that he (and we) can watch a trailer for "America," which is scheduled to hit theaters on July 4.
“Obama decided to try his hand at satire by going on that show, so we decided to play along," D’Souza told The Hollywood Reporter. “I believe that we have produced something that is funnier than the original. … Obama is a public figure and his comments are certainly fair game.”
