Did I Just Say That?': Emmy Award-Winning Actress Opens Up About 'Anguishing' Experience of Having an Abortion

"It was one of the most difficult things I've ever been through in my life."

Emmy award-winning actress Swoosie Kurtz, who plays Joyce Flynn on the TV show “Mike & Molly” and has appeared in past hits like “Liar Liar,” opened up about the “anguishing” experience of having an abortion in her youth during a recent interview with HuffPost Live.

"It was very important to me," Kurtz said of her "Citizen Ruth" role in 1996. "Because I had an abortion when I was -- Gosh, did I just say that?"

Though she described the experience as “impossibly difficult” emotionally and logistically, she also said she’d hate for the U.S. to go back to a time where only the wealthy can get a safe abortion.

"It was very, very difficult for me. It was one of the most difficult things I've ever been through in my life,” she said. “On all levels. Impossibly difficult."

HuffPost Live host Ricky Camilleri told the actress that more people should be more comfortable talking about past abortions, saying there shouldn’t be so much of a “stigma” surrounding the issue.

Kurtz also said she never found the courage to tell her mother that she had an abortion.

“That’s the one thing I never told my mother,” she added. “I don't know why. I just couldn't at that point.”
