She Heard a Cry for 'Daddy' Near a School, So She Went Looking...And Found Something Unexpected

"What!"

A woman in Connecticut heard a cry from the woods: "Daddy!"

She went looking, but while the woods were close to a school, the Associated Press reported, she didn't find a lost child — she found a talkative green parrot.

Lt. James Perez of the Fairfield police department said the parrot led responders on a bit of a chase on Thursday, with firefighters using a pole to remove the parrot from its tree perch, at which point it flapped over to a bamboo stand.

Firefighters eventually shooed the bird into the waiting net of an animal control officer.

Perez says the bird's vocabulary, which it exercised continuously throughout the rescue, included "Daddy," "hello," and "what!"

The bird had been reported missing and was about a mile from home, and was quickly reunited with its owner.
