Eight men in Australia stormed a school bus transporting Jewish schoolchildren Wednesday, threatening to cut their throats and shouting “kill the Jews.”
Parents told Australia's Daily Telegraph that the driver allowed the men — described as drunk — to board his bus, after which they proceeded with their verbal assault.
“They were screaming ‘Heil Hitler,’ ‘Kill the Jews,’ ‘Palestine must kill you Jews,’ ‘We’re going to cut your throats and slice your throats open’ — just all very bad anti-Semitic stuff,” said Jacqui Blackburn, the mother of three children who were on the bus. “I’m shaking like a leaf. My kids are on a private school bus, it’s only for Jewish schoolchildren.”
Blackburn said one of her daughters called her saying, “Hey Mummy, please help us, there are eight strange men who have been let on to a school bus and they are screaming ‘Heil Hitler! Kill the Jews!’ they want to cut out our throats.’”
“Then the phone cut off and I couldn’t hear anything,” Blackburn told the newspaper.
A 12-year-old girl named Noah described: “They got on and couldn’t walk properly and looked drunk and said they had just been pumping drugs in the city."
“They said ‘come sit with us, we won’t do anything,’ so we went to the bus driver and said ‘get them off the bus’ and he said ‘don’t worry’ and told them to ‘zip your lips,’” the girl said. “We were panicking and crying. When they got off the bus they said ‘f*** Jews’ and ‘stop taking over Palestine’ and ‘we will kill you and cut your throats.'"
The men finally got off the bus after the children who were hysterical called their parents.
All of the children riding the bus attend either Mount Sinai, Moriah school or Emanuel kindergarten in Sydney.
Blackburn blames the driver for letting them on in the first place.
“The bus driver opened the doors for these strange men and allowed them on to torment the kids,” she said.
Blackburn said that when she later approached the driver – said to be new on the job — he didn’t think he had done anything wrong.
“I went to the bus driver and said ‘how dare you’ and he denied everything. He wouldn’t give me his name or details. He said they weren’t drunk, he was justifying why he let them on, he was denying what the kids had gone through and been traumatized by,” she said.
The Telegraph reported that children later gave statements to the police.
Vic Alhadeff of the New South Wales Jewish Board of Deputies said they are“deeply disturbed by this incident and we are working with the police and the state government to ensure that proper and adequate security measures are put in place.”
Wednesday’s incident was just the latest in a string of anti-Semitic attacks in Australia amid Israel's recent actions in Gaza. Israel National News reported that a visiting Jewish leader, Rabbi Avraham Shalom Halberstam, was attacked by six teenagers in a shopping mall in Perth Monday.
"They were surrounding him, so I raced over to get him into the car and they surrounded the car screaming, ‘You are killing babies in Gaza,’" eyewitness Danny Mayer told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
Israel’s Arutz Sheva reported that two weeks ago, vandals sprayed the words "Zionist scum" on a Jewish school in Perth.
