Father Tragically Dies After Freak Little League Accident

"He dropped to the ground."

A 50-year-old father was helping his Little League baseball team warm up over the weekend when a line drive struck him in the head and ultimately killed him.

The coach, identified by Suffolk County Police as Richard Becher, was unconscious after taking the hit and bystanders were performing CPR when paramedics arrived at Baseball Heaven in Long Island, New York, after 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

The father of two was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly afterward, according to police.

“He threw a pitch, the ball got hit. It was a line drive,” the man's brother-in-law John Bree told Newsday, according to the New York Post. “He was hit in the head. He dropped to the ground.”

Denise Volpicello, a friend of the family, told the Post that the loss is "devastating for everyone."

“He was very active in the community," she said.
